STOP HELPING THE ADDICT STAY ILL
Most ill people need tender loving care to nurse them back to health. Drug addicts and alcoholics don't. Chemical dependence is an illness in which kindness can literally kill the sick person.
Most parents try to cure their addicts or alcoholics by 'helping' them. They find them flats, get them new jobs, pay the fines, get them proper legal help, take them to doctors, buy them new clothes, take them to psychiatrists for their supposed 'underlying problems', and a thousand other futile solutions.
Addicts usually co-operate enthusiastically. They promise that of course they will stop using drugs and that it will all be different if only they have the new flat, new job, new clothes, don't have to go to prison, don't see a doctor, or if they have their doubtful underlying Freudian problems sorted out.
Sometimes they manage a few weeks, occasionally a few months, without drugs. Then they go back on them again.
All this 'helping' allows the addict to escape the consequences of drug-using. It helps the addict or the alcoholic stay ill.
